Nutrition Tips for the Holidays
by Jodi
Citrin, RD. President, Citrition, LLC. www.citrition.com
Its that time
of year again. There are holiday parties every week, cookies and sweets everywhere you
turn and a to do list that just keeps growing. Youve been working so hard to
exercise and be healthy and you really dont want to sabotage your efforts, but your
motivation is fading and fast. Here are some tips for how to stay on track during the
holidays and what to do if you fall off. These
are NOT diet tips on how to avoid all the good foods, but rather tips to enjoy the
holidays and still feel great when New Years rolls around.
- Avoid letting one bad meal
or one too many indulgences sabotage the rest of your day. One of the most important things you can do
for yourself is realize that everyone has a bad eating day. Having one too
many desserts or one too many courses at lunch does not mean all of your efforts have gone
to waste and that you should give up. Just think of it as an indulgence. Pick yourself up
and start exactly where you left off. Turning that one meal into an entire day of pigging
out will only leave you feeling worse.
·
Avoid
starving yourself during the day when you know youre going to have a big dinner.
This is an all too common mistake. You know you have a holiday party or a big dinner and
so you eat hardly anything all day. You want to save up your calories for the pumpkin pie,
sweet potato pie and eggnog. This is NOT the way to eat less, but actually the opposite.
If you starve your body all day, you are guaranteed to overeat at night. Make sure to eat
as you normally would during the day. That way when you go to the party, you wont be
starving. You can make good choices and indulge in the foods you want. But, you will
actually be able to stop when youre full because you wont have gone to the
party starving.
·
Keep up
your workouts. Think of your walking or
running group as an appointment, not something optional. Just because things are getting
busy around the holidays doesnt mean you shouldnt make time for you. Make your
health and feeling good a priority. Exercise helps you burn those holiday calories so you
can fit into your clothing when they are over, but it only works if the exercise is
consistent.
·
Stay
clear of the low carb diets. Carbohydrates are GOOD for you and really important if
you are walking or running. Carbohydrates are your muscles fuel. Without carbs, your
muscles cant work properly. So, enjoy those healthy carbs, the whole grains, fruits,
vegetables and beans
have some sweet potatoes, squash, string beans and stuffing (Try
it with whole wheat bread. Its delicious and healthy!)
·
Keep
yourself hydrated. If youre
exercising, you know how important it is to keep your body hydrated. Holiday foods tend to be very salty which can
dehydrate your body. Also, if you drink alcohol, whether its wine, beer or liquor,
that can dehydrate you even more. So, make sure to drink water before, during and after
your workout.
·
Dont
weigh yourself all the time. As a woman, your weight fluctuates a lot depending on the
time of the month. During the holidays, it will fluctuate even more with those huge meals
and salty foods (which cause water retention and therefore make your weight go up). If you
do weigh yourself, do it once a week on the same day each week. And, always weigh yourself
first thing in the morning before you drink anything. If you dont like the scale,
find a pair of pants that fit you comfortably. Try the pants on once each week to make
sure they still fit comfortably. If they do, you know youre doing okay.
·
Enjoy
and embrace this time of year. Eat, laugh and remember to find time for your exercise.
Youve worked hard to reach the fitness point that you are at. Keep at it so that you
dont have to start from scratch when New Years rolls around.
